Sliding door wardrobes don’t offer you any more space within the wardrobe but it’s a space saver on the outside. When you have a wardrobe with doors that open out you eat into the space available within the bedroom, sliding doors gives you the same function of a wardrobe but gives more space around your bedroom and so you can place the bed or a chair closer to the wardrobe than you could ordinarily.

Choose a bedside cabinet with drawers within them. There are many styles of bedside cabinets and some of them are of a design without any drawers within them. They may look visually stunning and stylish but having drawers within your bedside table is a life saver for space, some of them have up to 3 drawers which can be used for knick knacks or clothes or books etc.

Choose cabinets that can be placed on the wall high up and out the way. With the cupboards being high up they will not overcrowd the bedroom too much and give you mountains of space for all your belongings.

These are just few space saving tips for your bedroom furniture, so before you choose and buy your bedroom suite have a look to see if you will be able to store away all of your things, or if you can choose are more storage friendly bedroom suite.

Bed Bugs: Are They Real?

baby bedroom furniture

If you thought that bed bugs were things that your parents just thought up on their own, you’re wrong. There are really bed bugs and they really can enter into your bed while you sleep at night. Although many don’t realize it, bed bugs are creatures that you can have in your home right now. You may think that there’s no chance of that happening, but in reality, they are there. You should take the time to find out if you have them and then, if you do, you should get your home treated, as they are likely living throughout the fabrics in your home!

Where Are They?

The first thing to realize is that bed bugs may be lurking in your bed. Take a few minutes to check out your bed. Don’t just look at the sheets, but look under them. Look in the folds of the mattress, including along the edges where the mattresses are sown together. If you see tiny little black marks, those are the droppings from bed bugs. Usually you won’t see the creatures unless it is late at night. Generally they can burrow their way into the mattress itself and live there. But, they can also live in the walls of your bedroom. As long as they are within a few feet of your bed, they are ready and able to lie in wait for you! You may never actually see these creatures, either.

Another sign that you have bed bugs happens to be on your body. Most of the time, bed bugs will come into your bed, bite you in one location, draw blood to drink, then move to another location, generally in a line that runs with your vein. If you have unexplained marks on any part of your skin, it may be do to them. Or, you may notice blood stains that are very small on your sheets. This too is a sign that you may be being bit at night.

What In The World Can You Do?

Bed bugs are creatures of habit and they also need you. You are their source of food. Although they don’t have to feed nightly, they do need you at some point. What’s more is that there are probably many hundreds and thousands of them lurking in wait. Therefore, it is important for you to seek out the help of a professional cleaner to get rid of them. Unfortunately, you may need to replace your mattress as there aren’t many ways to thoroughly clean them without allowing mold to grow in them.

You should have a professional come into your home as well as clean all carpeting, drapes and even the couches and sofas in your home. Because they can travel and they can host off of your pets, they can be located in various places throughout your home. Removing them from your home should be one of the most important things to do. Once they are gone, purchase plastic style mattress covers and pillow covers that won’t allow anything to get in or get out of the mattresses and pillows including bed bugs.

Buyer’s guide to beds

baby bedroom furniture

If you can’t remember the last time you had a good night’s sleep, it could well be your rickety old bed (not your stressful lifestyle) that’s to blame. We spoke to the best in the bedding business to get this top advice on shopping for a new bed.

1. Invest in quality

Nigel Cairns of Bedworld says, ‘The one golden rule is that you pay for what you get. The more you pay for your new bed or mattress then the better the quality will be.’ A bed will continue to lose its comfort and support year after year so buy the most expensive one that you can afford. A good quality bed should last ten years.

2. The seven year itch

According to the Sleep Council, ‘the critical ’seven year itch’ can be a make or break moment for many marriages and mattresses’. If your mattress is more than seven years old it almost certainly needs replacing. Decide whether you want an open coil, pocket sprung, latex or foam mattress with the help of our Buyer’s guide to mattresses. But first take the Sleep Council’s MOT quiz and assess the state of your sleeping equipment.

3. Roll around

Try the bed in all of the sleeping positions you tend to use, not only on your back,’ says Lucy Benham, assistant buyer for beds at John Lewis. ‘Place your hand in the small of your back and try to move it about. If it moves too easily, the bed may be too hard for you; if it’s a struggle to move your hand, then the bed is too soft. If you can move your hand with just a little resistance, the bed may be just right for you.’ Sleep easy on this Hotel 4-poster bed from John Lewis.

4. To slat or not?

Adam Black, of bed specialists Feather & Black says, ‘Flat wooden slats are the equivalent of placing the mattress on the floor. Always opt for a sprung base, be it a sprung divan or sprung beech slats.’ Foam mattresses are ideal for slatted bases as the springs on other mattresses will push through the slats over time and shorten the life of your mattress. Their Well Base bed (£654.75 for a super-king) combines the comfort of a divan with the contemporary look of a bed base. Superior style and comfort. Stephen George, bedroom furniture buyer for Harrods, is even more specific. ‘If going for slats, we recommend that they should be sprung timber slats, not be more than 6cms apart,’ he says.

5. Supersize me

‘Opt for the largest bed size the room can accommodate’, says Black. ‘Small beds are fine when you are getting on well with whoever you share it with, but tend to seem much smaller at those other times’. The Sleep Council says a regular four foot six double bed gives two sleepers less space than the size of a baby’s cot. But, warns Toby Ash of New Heights, ‘Consider the other furniture you have in the room and ensure that you have sufficient space around the bed to make the room functional. Mark out the size of the bed you are considering on your floor to ensure it is not going to be an obstacle.’ Feather & Black’s regal-looking Highgrove bed from will ensure sweet dreams.

6. Upholstered headboard

‘Solid wooden beds will last longer than veneered ones,’ says Adam Black. ‘Buying upholstered headboards which have removable covers makes sense. You can clean and dry-clean the covers once in a while and you can always give your bedroom a facelift by updating the fabric on the headboard.’ As for the end of the bed, Toby Ash of New Heights says ‘high footboards can look great in large rooms with high ceilings but taller people may find a low footboard more comfortable and less restrictive.’

7. Keep the bed bugs away

Sensitive types should opt for a hypo-allergenic mattress like this king-size Rockingham mattress from The Conran Shop which will help asthma and breathing problems. Their anti-dust mite properties will stop you from sneezing all night long.

8. Matchmaker, matchmaker

How do you match the mattress to the base? ‘These days almost all quality mattresses perform just as well on a slatted base as they would on a sprung divan,’ says Black. However, he warns salesmen will confuse customers by linking mattress performance to a particular base to make a double sale.

9. Guest beds

Guest/folding and storage beds provide flexible solutions for overnight guests. With a small bedroom, it makes sense to use your bed as a secondary storage option. Opt for a Platinum raised inflatable aerobed from John Lewis.

10. Ready built or flat pack?

Make sure you find out from retailers whether they will deliver the bed in one piece or whether you’ll need to put it together yourself. These days there are flat pack options that extend far beyond IKEA. The Bourne double bed from Furniture123 is simple and chic.

Best Kid’s mattress

kids bedroom furniture

A bed is the centerpiece of your kid’s bedroom. Compared to adult’s bedroom, a kid’s bedroom is the one where all the action happens. It becomes their playground. Hence, it is necessary to choose the furniture for this room pretty wisely.

Sharp edges and high furniture are not advisable as they are more accident prone. Once the child has grown out of the crib, parents rush to buy a toddler bed to hold them until they have grown to fit a large size bed. This leads to unwanted expenses and parents end up spending more than they ever imagined.

Bunk beds are the natural option for a kid’s bed. However, you also need a good mattress to go along with it which will make the bed more comfortable. Memory foam mattresses are the best bed. They are not only comfortable but also have a unique property of conforming to a person’s shape and body temperature.

Those parents who are still skeptical about bunk beds for their children can opt for an air bed. Air bed mattress has all of the features as far as size and distance from the ground and also comes with some extra perks to accommodate a growing child.

Air bed mattress is low to the ground to protect smaller children from hitting the ground hard in the even they roll off. It also has a raised edge that goes all around the mattress to keep them from falling out in the first place. They are made from very durable material that will hold up to 150 pounds of body weight and is also hypoallergenic, which could be much better for children who have asthma than regular cotton and polyester bedding materials.

These beds can be moved easily for cleaning purposes. They can also be taken completely down by simply letting the air out in a matter of seconds. The storage case that comes with it makes it very easy to take along on vacation or for sleepovers at other homes.

Though Air beds are convenient, comfortable and handy, they come with a huge price tag. Memory foam mattresses on the other hand are a bit pricey but compared to the comfort it provides and the durability, it is indeed a wise investment.

Apart from conforming to the body’s shape and temperature, these Kid’s mattresses are hypoallergenic. The only thing that you have to worry about is the height of the mattress. Also, there should be protective guard rail around the mattress which can protect the child from rolling over and falling. The height of the mattress should be less than the guard rail.

Regardless of the mattress you choose, make sure it is durable and does not attract much dust or mites.

Find a Beautiful Canopy Bed to Create a Romantic Bedroom

luxury bedroom furniture

A crown canopy makes a dramatic statement in a room. Long fabric panels fall from under a valanced top section, making a sweep of color and style that is unforgettable.

A canopy bed may sound exotic and out of reach. But really, a canopy bed can be made with a simple swag of fabric or by constructing an elaborate draped treatment. This article about canopy beds will give you lots of ideas and pictures of simple and not-so-simple styles of canopy beds that will help to add romance to your bedroom.

The easiest way to create a simple canopy for your bed is to hang a piece of fabric over the top frame rails of a structured canopy bed. But if your bed doesn’t have a canopy frame, there are other ways to get the look of a canopy and to surround your bed in softness and color. You can achieve a very attractive canopy bed look by installing curtain rods to the ceiling, placing one over each end of the bed.

Using either tab-top, tie-top, pinch-pleated or gathered panels, attach the fabric to each curtain rod and let it drape softly to the floor. You can also attach a short rod to the ceiling, perpendicular to the head of the bed on each side. Hang the panels to the floor and tie back with a drapery tieback.

There’s really not anything that can make a bedroom feel romantic the way a canopy bed can. Our article shows many styles of canopies and bed hangings that can turn a ho-hum bedroom into something really spectacular.

A dramatic crown canopy, also called a coronet, looks elegant in any bedroom. Attach panels of fabric around the outer edge of a half-circle of 3/4″ plywood. This half-circle can be attached directly to the ceiling or floated just off the ceiling with L-brackets attached to the wall.

You can add a romantic look to a plain-Jane bed by draping long fabric panels through a wooden or metal ring attached to the ceiling above the center of the head of the bed.

Draw the fabric panel through the ring, pulling it down to the floor on either side of the bed. Spread the panels out to display more fabric and frame the bed or drape the panels around the bed posts at the head of the bed.

Another simple treatment is to install a ring on the ceiling at both sides of the head of the bed and draw the long fabric panel through both rings. Swag the area between the two rings at the ceiling to form a lush top frame for your bed.

The panels should extend to the floor on both sides of the bed. If you install 4 rings, one at each corner of the bed, try drawing a long panel of fabric through each one. Be sure one end of the panel at each ring goes all the way to the floor. With four panels of luxurious fabric draped above and down the sides of your bed, the look is very elegant.

You can really use any type of fabric you want to create a beautiful canopy bed. Traditional fabrics for canopies are chintz, silk, velvet,or tapestry. But you can achieve a fun look for a country setting with muslin or gingham or charming calico. You can also use sheets that coordinate with your bedding to construct the long panels for a uniform look.

For ease of use and simplicity of style, bed hangings are generally cut to touch the floor when hung. If you prefer a luxurious look, cut the panels 4″ longer and “puddle” the fabric on the floor at the edge of the bed. Be sure to lift the panel when you need to vacuum the floor.

For a truly professional look, more body, and longer wear, add lining to the panel of fabric or use a coordinating print or solid for the back of the panel. After all, the inside and outside of the panel will both show when you swag it. Add borders, fringe, ribbon trim, and cording. Coordinate trims with tiebacks, adding color, texture, and body. Remember that a tieback will pull the fabric off the floor, so cut the panels slightly longer.

Go on to see more views of beautiful canopy beds and swag treatments. You’re sure to see a style that will give a wonderful romantic look to your personal sanctuary.

Find a style of canopy bed that will fit your decorating style and budget and create a really romantic bedroom just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Contemporary Style Bedrooms

classic bedroom furniture

Styles go in and out of fashion. The contemporary style, also known as the modern style, emphasises minimalism and simplicity. We provide tips on how to achieve this affect.

Over the last thirty years, I’ve moved house a few times, and each time I’ve decorated my house in exactly the same way – the simple way. People in many professions find it necessary to relocate to new cities or new states on a regular basis (the military, for one), and many of these individual have a tendency to cut down on their possessions, because that makes it a lot easier to move house. Alternatively, they keep their possessions in storage for decades, so that when they finally retire they can unpack everything they’ve accumulated over the years, and finally enjoy it all!

Most people, however, only move once or twice in their lifetimes.

Which is not to say that, just because you’ve been in the same house or apartment for several years, you can’t regularly redecorate your home to give it and yourself a new look. Indeed, if you’ve ever decided you need a complete change to start on a new path, there’s no need to move house, just redesign the one you’re in.

If you’re in quest of a new look, there are many resources for you to use in order to find exactly what you need. Surf the web for thousands of photos of various design styles, from the classic styles such as Colonial and Federal, to the current day styles, and in particular the Contemporary style.

The Contemporary style, also known as the Modern style, is characterized by an emphasis on minimalism, on a lack of ornamentation in the furniture, in a subdued palette of colors for walls and carpeting , and accessories kept to a minimum.

Decorating Your Bedroom in the Contemporary Style

The rule of thumb in decorating a room is to build everything around a central focal point. In the bedroom, of course, the central focal point is the bed. In traditional designs, the bed is usually cluttered with throw pillows and made to look like anything other than a bed until bedtime. In the contemporary style, the bed is just a bed, an ornament in itself, with a sleek design, in metal, or dark wood. Bedspreads of white, beige or other subdued color make the room seem larger and more airy.

Bedroom furniture

The key is to have just as much furniture as you need, and no more. Don’t have a chair in a corner if you never sit in it, and especially don’t have it flanked with a couple of occasional tables with lamps if you never use them! If you have a walk-in closet that can obviate the need for dressers and armoires against the walls…get used to the feeling of space created by not having these items intruding into the space of the room itself.

Accessories

Accessories should be kept to a minimum. If you like flowers, by all means have a vase of flowers on the bedside table. If you like teddy bears or fluffy animals or sculpture, have a couple of these. The key is to not overdo it and end up having a cluttered look. It’s not as restful as a neat, clean look.

Walls should be painted in a subdued pallette – white, beige, tan – so that they can set off other splashes of color in the room, from a bright red vase to a colorful painting on the wall. Here again, let the wall space breathe. Don’t cover every square inch with a decoration of some kind.

In the contemporary style (and in contemporary housing design), ceiling light fixtures are a thing of the past. (Or, considering how tastes change, the future.) An occasional lamp on your bedside table, or recessed lighting in the headboard of the bed, give the room a classy look.

Regardless of how you decorate your bedroom, of course, the idea is that you must feel comfortable in it.

Good sleep requires your bedroom set up like this

baby bedroom furniture

re’s a need – a real one or just a perceived one – you can count on some company somewhere to create a product to meet it at a profit. It will probably be a technological solution. Our age is in love with technology. And the profit will be as big as possible. Maybe a drug will also be patented for that need and be sold everywhere ? that drug may even work. But that’s another article.

When it comes to a need, hundreds of thousands of people world-wide say that they don’t get enough good sleep. And reams of studies from researchers of all kinds seem to back them up.

The Japanese electronics giant Matsushita decided that the ideal solution was a technical one, and their solution was the “perfect sleeping room.” They put their designers and engineers to work. Here’s what they came up with.

The Technological Solution

It’s like something out of science fiction. There’s a giant TV screen and a control panel on the wall. The walls are thick sound-absorbing material.

There’s music. Most of it is gentle guitar or piano music. There are sounds of a brook, with birds in the background.

The bed probably doesn’t look like your bed at home. It’s upright like a giant recliner or a hospital bed. The TV screen, over the dresser, is aligned to be directly in your line of sight.

After you’ve sat in the bed for a while, the room starts to do its thing. The lights dim. The screen goes dark. All sound except the brook die away as the back of the bed lowers you into sleeping position.

The bed begins to massage you. This is not one of those cheap motel devices where you put in a coin and for five minutes of vibration. This is gentle and concentrated on your upper and lower back.

After a while the massage stops. The room goes completely dark.

Air is released from the mattress. Your body settles deeper into it.

According to the people at Matsushita, everyone who has tried the system has fallen asleep. Sounds good, but there’s no track record of people who’ve had a system for any length of time.

That could have something to do with the price. If you want the “perfect sleeping room,” Matsushita-style, it will cost you $30,000.

Do It Yourself

That’s an awful lot of money for a system that might or might not give you a good night’s sleep. And what happens if the system goes on the blink? Do you have to send it out for warranty repairs? If so, now you’re dependent on it like a drug, how do you sleep until then?

That all makes no sense to me. Instead, try some low-tech, low-cost things that we know will help you sleep better.

A Good Foundation

Good mattresses aren’t cheap these days. That may be why most people keep them far too long.

According to the British Sleep Council, most people hold on to a bed for almost twenty years. By then a bed is just a lump of tired and old rags with metal springs.

When you get a new bed, make sure you get one that’s big enough. The Furniture Industry Research Organization says that 80 percent of Britons sleep on standard double bed, which is not big enough to be comfortable.

With a bed that size, sleeping with another person, you have as much relative room to move as a baby in a crib. Get a bed that’s at least 5 feet 6 inches wide. It should be at least 6 feet 6 inches long, too, unless one of you is really tall and you need something longer.

A Cool, Dark, Quiet Place

Light is a signal to your body to wake up. So keep light out.

Police officers and others who have to sleep during the day have been known to nail sleeping bags over the windows. You don’t need that. Quality lined drapes will do a better job and not make it seem like you’re sleeping in a youth hostel.

If you’ve got an alarm clock with a bright display, turn it off or at least down. Turn off other lights or displays that might affect your sleep.

And keep your sleeping room cool. The general rule is that cooler is better, but stay above 12 degrees Celsius. Keep cool but comfortable.

You won’t be able to do much about the noise outside your room unless you move. But you can do some things inside.

Those good curtains I mentioned will help keep noise out. There’s a technological solution, too.

“White noise” is noise made up of all the available frequencies. Practically, “white noise” is used to mask background noise and sounds.

An inexpensive white noise generator can do the trick. So can a small fan that runs while you sleep. The unobtrusive fan noise will mask other, more annoying noises.

Scent and Feel

Where you’re sleeping also involves the material of everything you’re sleeping on.

Pick natural fibers for whatever you wear to bed. They absorb moisture well and breathe better than synthetic fabrics.

For a little extra relaxation help, try a natural lavender scent. Research shows it can improve the quality of sleep. Naturally lavender-scented ironing sprays are a good solution.

Your sleeping room is only part of the formula for great sleep. And, the “Perfect Sleep Room” is an expensive, high-tech solution. But it may not work as well some simpler, easier and less expensive ways to create your own perfect sleep room.

Environmental versus psychological

Everything in this report deals with the external surrounds for where you are sleeping. Personally, it’s my belief that all these are nothing more than training wheels on a bicycle.

It’s great to get you started, but one day you need to progress beyond it.

The real key to sleeping anywhere and anytime is to learn to flip the sleep switches inside your mind and body. Once you learn that, you’ll be able to fall asleep on a bus, plane, foreign hotel bed ? even with a partner snoring next to you like a drowning water buffalo.

A Quick Guide to Beds

european bedroom furniture

Whenever you start the process of shopping for furniture, it can become time-consuming, wasting energy and effort over the simple decision of choosing pieces that match your personality and taste. If you’re in the market for a new bed, don’t fret—there are plenty of options to choose from. Generally speaking, whether or not you like a classic take or a modern one on bedroom furniture, you will probably enjoy a platform bed, a sleigh bed, or a canopy bed the most.

“http://www.eco-furniture.com/bedroom-furniture/platform-beds.php”>Platform beds are the best way to contemporize your bedroom furniture without going over your budget. These low-profile beds give off an Asian or European vibe with their sleek lines and modern chic. Because the bed is so minimal in its design, its unadorned headboard blends into its surroundings. Despite the understated sophisticated of a “http://www.eco-furniture.com/bedroom-furniture/platform-beds.php”>platform bed, they are money savers because they don’t need a box spring for your mattress. Instead, slats run across the width of the bed, effortlessly supporting the mattress.

Sleigh beds are ideal for someone who wants a touch of modern bedroom furniture while still keeping aligned with more traditional fare. Created during the Empire period, sleigh beds were originally designed with elaborate detail work and scrolling on the headboard. Newer sleigh beds are a bit more pared down, with headboards and feet with less design, making them a great match to nearly any bedroom décor.

Canopy beds exude traditional style and elegance; if you love the look of time-honored four posters, the canopy bed is the best fit for you. First used in the 1400s in Europe, the canopy bed has grown throughout the centuries into a more delicately decorative piece of bedroom furniture. Oftentimes they will come with top enclosures so you can hang your favorite fabrics on the sides. Today, canopy beds range from overly ornate to a more contemporary look.
